Can They Watch You Through Your TV/Monitor?
It has been said that CRT screens (non-hd/lcd TVs and monitors) create a mirrored image on the back side of the screen and that this could be monitored via TEMPEST technology. If this were going on, it probably wouldn’t be at random. It would most likely only be used on “persons of interest”. People with the technical know-how to do packet-sniffing on their cable box may be able to discover something interesting. I can personally say that if you monitor your incoming/outgoing IP activity long enough (save it to text so you can easily look up the IPs) you will get a hit from the Department of Defense, at least I did. Whether it is some random widespread snooping program looking for certain keywords or files, or just a computer that has been (somewhat ironically) invested with spyware, causing it to search for other vulnerable computers to infect.
Even if they can’t see you through your screen (they probably can), they can definitely see what is on your screen at any time. I know that a lot of people won’t even go to the link that I’m about to provide and they will just dismiss this is all as a paranoid delusion. I assure you, TEMPEST is very real. Whether or not everyone needs to be worried about it remains to be seen.
